CARMOJI

Carmoji is a product design concept that reduces road rage through better driver-to-driver communication. The app connects with a smart projection device that displays expressive icons and short messages on the rear window, allowing drivers to convey intent and emotion safely. By introducing a new visual language for the road, Carmoji enhances empathy, minimizes misunderstandings, and improves the driving experience.
This case study outlines the design process from user research to interaction flow and final UI, exploring how thoughtful design can create safer and more human-centered mobility.

Overview

"Road rage"  can cause altercations, injuries, and crashes that result in injuries or even death, and aggressive driving has become a topic of concern over the past few decades.

One of the main reasons is the lack of communication with other drivers. For instance, some road rage happened because of driving in the wrong lane. The road rage drivers would yell obscenities at or honk their horns constantly. Suppose drivers could communicate with each other to convey their emotions, express their intentions, and even apologize for doing something wrong. In that case, it might help calm the feelings of road rage sufferers.

Research

We made a questionnaire to help us understand how drivers feel about road rage behavior and how they respond to it. More than 50 participants answered this questionnaire. There are 3 most impressive findings we identified in this questionnaire.

Analysis

Our interviews and questionnaire validate our provisional persona. It is related to all drivers with different conditions. Whether in the metropolis or a small town, having more driving experience or a lack of driving experience, emotional state, emergency event, road condition, gender, and education level. These are some of the reasons for the road rage problem. Almost all the drivers are the victims of road rage problems, by other people or by themselves.

More than 80% of the data we collected from our interview and questionnaire shows that drivers wish to improve their road rage problems. They seek more communication with each other to express their current situation. More communication can create more understanding, decreasing the occurrence rate of road rage problems.
